The Cross

The picture of the Cross e’en from the start,

Has been repulsive to many a heart,

It speaks of weakness and of bitter shame,

And carries a most unattractive name.

Explanations according to men’s word,

All make its meaning even more absurd,

Where is its purpose, its sense and its gain?

Which part of it will we want to attain?

Only a fool will dare follow the cross

That leads to great agony, pain and loss,

A way not hidden, a way not obscure,

Leading to death, nothing less, nothing more.

But who can explain the Almighty’s plan,

Predestined long ago for sinful man?

Life that goes counter to the way we think,

And from it we only can but shrink.

Gracious God, whose way is folly to us,

Teach us to accept all, in Christ Jesus,

For without divine learning every day,

Foolish, stubborn pride will lead us astray.

Jesus, to the cross we will follow You,

With all its sorrow, its pain real and true,

For in Christ Jesus, our one true Saviour,

We will be made one in our Redeemer.

Now the folly’s wisdom, the absurd sense,

And my life Lord, I give free of defense,

So that some person through me, will be sought,

And joyfully to the cross will be brought.

This assurance is for eternity,

That sinners, at the cross, will be made free,

The angels in heaven rejoice daily,

When the penitent returns faithfully.

Upon the cross we can no longer frown,

It’s the only way to receive the crown,

And all who will trust its path patiently,

Know its glory and assured victory.

Amen!
