A Prayer At Pentecost

O Jesus, ere we falter on our pilgrim walk below,

Keep us ever mindful as Your saving grace You bestow,

Since You came to call the fallen, the downcast and the weak,

Your love will never grow weary, the wretched ones to seek.

O give us hearing ears to hear and hearts surrendered low,

That in our utter bondage, Your freeing word we would know,

The word of power and of might that can all strong chains break,

Command in us O Lord Thy will, e’en for Thine own Name’s sake.

Make us to see as Thou dost see, not as we choose to view

The paths that we have trodden, nor the thoughts we hold as true,

Break down our sacred places, release us from our thinking,

That Pentecostal hearing will give us new, changed living.

Let not this day You’ve given us become another page,

In the chants of our history, on each self-erected stage,

Break down old and new barriers Lord, confront us though we hide,

Take guilt and shame and ignorance, Lord take our sinful pride.

We hear Your word, we want the life in You, that’s on offer,

For us You came, for us You died, for us You did suffer,

O Jesus, Friend of sinners, the dirty and the filthy,

Keep our eyes fixed upon You, for Lord we are unworthy.

Unworthy to receive Your love, You love without limit,

For on this day, You baptise us, with Your Holy Spirit,

And so we come just as we are, take all, take all we pray,

For You have given us Your all, baptising us today.

Amen!
